Quasar

A quasi-stellar radio source (quasar) is a very energetic and distant galaxy with an active galactic nucleus. Quasars were first identified as being high redshift sources of electromagnetic energy, including radio waves and visible light, that were point-like, similar to stars, rather than extended sources similar to galaxies.


While there was initially some controversy over the nature of these objects—as recently as the early 1980s, there was no clear consensus as to their nature—there is now a scientific consensus that a quasar is a compact region in the centre of a massive galaxy surrounding the central supermassive black hole. Its size is 10-10,000 times the Schwarzschild radius of the black hole. The quasar is powered by an accretion disc around the black hole.

Ultraviolet Radiation


a form of radiation that occurs beyond the violet end of the visible light spectrum of ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES. Ultraviolet rays have a FREQUENCY ranging from 1015Hz to 1018Hz, with a wavelength from 10-7m to 10-10m. They are part of natural sunlight and are also emitted by white-hot objects (as opposed to red-hot objects, which emit INFRARED RADIATION). As well as affecting photographic film and causing certain minerals to fluoresce, ultraviolet radiation will rapidly destroy bacteria. Although ultraviolet rays in sunlight will convert steroids in human skin to vitamin D (essential for healthy bone growth), too much can cause irreversible damage to the skin and eyes and damage the structure of the DNA in cells. Fortunately, a great deal of the ultraviolet radiation from the sun is prevented from reaching the earth as the OZONE LAYER in the upper atmosphere acts as a UV filter.

The discovery of UV radiation was intimately associated with the observation that silver salts darken when exposed to sunlight. In 1801 the German physicist Johann Wilhelm Ritter made the hallmark observation that invisible rays just beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum were especially effective at darkening silver chloride-soaked paper. He called them "de-oxidizing rays" to emphasize their chemical reactivity and to distinguish them from "heat rays" at the other end of the visible spectrum. The simpler term "chemical rays" was adopted shortly thereafter, and it remained popular throughout the 19th century. The terms chemical and heat rays were eventually dropped in favor of ultraviolet and infrared radiation, respectively.

The discovery of the ultraviolet radiation below 200 nm, named vacuum ultraviolet because it is strongly absorbed by air, was made in 1893 by the German physicist Victor Schumann.

A taxis (plural taxes, pronounced /ˈtæksiːz/) is an innate behavioral response by an organism to a directional stimulus or gradient of stimulus intensity. A taxis differs from a tropism (turning response, often growth towards or away from a stimulus) in that the organism has motility and demonstrates guided movement towards or away from the stimulus source. It is sometimes distinguished from a kinesis, a non-directional change in activity in response to a stimulus that results in the migration toward or away from a stimulus.

Magellanic Clouds


two separate GALAXIES, detached from the Milky Way, which appear, from the southern hemisphere, as patches of light. The Large Magellanic Cloud is approximately 170,000 LIGHT YEARS away and the Small Magellanic Cloud about 210,000 light years away. They contain a few thousand million stars.

Dark Reaction


a stage in PHOTOSYNTHESIS which is not directly dependent on light. It takes place within the CHLOROPLASTS of the cells of green plants.

Photosynthesis, or the light-independent reactions, are chemical reactions that convert carbon dioxide and other compounds into glucose. The reactions occur in the stroma, the fluid-filled area of a chloroplast outside of the thylakoid membranes. These reactions take the products of the light-dependent reactions and perform further chemical processes on them. There are three phases to the light-independent reactions, collectively called the Calvin Cycle: carbon fixation, reduction reactions, and ribulose 1,5-diphosphate (RuDP) regeneration.


The light-independent reactions are sometimes referred to as the dark reactions, though that term may be misleading as they do not actually require darkness to proceed. The term "light-independent" is used to emphasize that the reactions continue even in the absence of light as long as the proper substrate compounds are available. However, because the availability of substrates in plants depends on photosynthesis, the reactions cannot be said to be entirely "light-independent." The term "dark reactions" may be more accurate in CAM (Crassulacean acid metabolism) plants, which only take up CO2, which is necessary for the reactions to proceed, at night.

Dark Nebulae

A dark nebula is a type of interstellar cloud that is so dense that it obscures the light from the background emission or reflection nebula (e.g., the Horsehead Nebula) or that it blocks out background stars (e.g., the Coalsack Nebula). The extinction of the light is caused by interstellar dust grains located in the coldest, densest parts of larger molecular clouds. Clusters and large complexes of dark nebulae are associated with Giant Molecular Clouds. Isolated small dark nebulae are called Bok globules. Like other interstellar dust/material, things it obscures are only visible using radio waves in radio astronomy.


Dark clouds appear so because of submicrometre-sized dust particles, coated with frozen carbon monoxide and nitrogen, which effectively block the passage of light at visible wavelengths. Also present are molecular hydrogen, atomic helium, C18O, CS, NH3 (ammonia), H2CO (formaldehyde), c-C3H2 (cyclopropenylidene) and a molecular ion N2H+ (diazenylium), all of which are relatively transparent. These clouds are the spawning grounds of stars and planets, and understanding their development is essential to understanding star formation.


The form of such dark clouds is very irregular: they have no clearly defined outer boundaries and sometimes take on convoluted serpentine shapes. The largest dark nebulae are visible to the naked eye, appearing as dark patches against the brighter background of the Milky Way.


In the inner regions of dark nebulae important events take place, such as the formation of stars and masers.

Radiation


the giving out of energy from a source, which may be in the form of ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES (radio, light, X-rays, infrared rays, etc.), particles or sound waves.

In physics, radiation describes any process in which energy emitted by one body travels through a medium or through space, ultimately to be absorbed by another body. Non-physicists often associate the word with ionizing radiation (e.g., as occurring in nuclear weapons, nuclear reactors, and radioactive substances), but it can also refer to electromagnetic radiation (i.e., radio waves, infrared light, visible light, ultraviolet light, and X-rays) which can also be ionizing radiation, to acoustic radiation, or to other more obscure processes. What makes it radiation is that the energy radiates (i.e., it travels outward in straight lines in all directions) from the source. This geometry naturally leads to a system of measurements and physical units that are equally applicable to all types of radiation. Some radiations can be hazardous.

Aberration


is what happens in physics when a lens (or curved mirror) does not produce a true image. It is caused by the light rays from any point on the object being viewed forming an image (focusing) at slightly different positions. In astronomy, aberration refers to the apparent change in position of a star. This is due to the fixed speed of light travelling from the star and the movement of the person looking at the star, because the Earth is moving in its orbit.
