Nappe

a large-scale geological structure (tens of kilometres) occurring as a sheet of rock which has been pushed over a fault plane or THRUST at the base. They are formed due to compression, but an alternative mechanism is the sliding due to gravity along a low angle fault, as seen in the Swiss Alps. In many cases, the origin of nappes may be due to a combination of both mechanisms.

In geology, a nappe is a large sheetlike body of rock that has been moved more than 2 km (1.2 miles) or 5 km from its original position. Nappes form during continental plate collisions, when folds are sheared so much that they fold back over on themselves and break apart. The resulting structure is a large-scale recumbent fold. The term stems from the French word for tablecloth.


Nappes or nappe belts are a major feature of the European Alps, Carpathians and Balkans. The concept was developed by the French geologists who unraveled the complex tectonic history of the Alps, led by M.A. Bertrand, who identified the feature as nappe de charriage. In Switzerland it was A. Escher von der Linth and M. Lugeon. At the same time, nappe structure was investigated in northwestern Scotland by Ch. Lapworth. The Austroalpine nappes of the eastern Alps consist of a series of three thrust-faulted nappe stacks which overlie the three older Penninic nappes in this very complex system.

Earthquake


the often violent movement of the earth along a fault or fault zone due to tectonic upheaval caused by the sudden release of stress that has built up over some time. The focus is the point at which the earthquake originates within the earth and earthquakes are classified by depth of focus: shallow -- less than 70 km; intermediate -- 70-300 km; deep -- more than 300 km. Attempts to predict earthquakes rely upon measurement of stress increases, but can so far be related only to an increasing risk of activity.

I'm lazy. My parents tell me to do something and I say, "OK, in a little bit," but then I don't. How can I overcome this fault of mine?

We commend you on your desire to change. That's an important first step that many people don't take.

So much of what we do is habit--both good and bad. Fortunately, it's not as hard as you might think to build good work habits.

We develop a lazy streak by habitually neglecting necessary duties. By putting off what we know we should do, we build up an unnecessary dislike and even fear of our assignments. What are normally small jobs grow into gigantic chores in our minds.

Here's how to make the jobs your parents ask you to do easier.

Make up your mind to do the task right away. The longer it takes to get started, the harder the chore will seem.

You'll have to do the job sooner or later, so you might as well get enthusiastically right into it. It won't hurt you. What will hurt is the constant strain of thinking about it and your parents nagging or disciplining you for neglect.

Make a checklist of regular chores that your parents routinely ask you to do (like taking out the garbage, cleaning your room or vacuuming the car). Nothing will please them more than getting jobs done before they have to ask you.

The satisfaction of making your parents happy and knowing that you've contributed to maintaining your home will become a good habit. You'll hardly remember that you were ever lazy!
